  • Progress on the Turbo Z24 new turbo setup

Well, as some of you know, I recently decided to "downgrade" the Cavalier engine.

I got the motor pulled, built a basically stock 3.1 for it, installed the motor, and built a crossover, downpipe, and converter to muffler exhuast. Not to bad for 4 weekends of work.

It's coming along decently. Of course, the old motor is destined for my 74' MGB GT, Twin turbo, 3.1 V6, TKO-600 tranny, and Ford 8.8 with some other goodies. I have the MGB, just waiting to finish the Cav before I pull it apart.

Looks clean. If you dont mind me asking... Did you have a 3T40 at one point with the turbocharged setup? If so, what did you do for the transmissions vacuum source?

I always had a 5TM40 (MG2, HM-282, what ever you feel like calling it). Went through 2 of them, several sets of axles, that's why I gave up on high HP FWD.....

        Oh ok.
How much power you plan to put down with it now that you depowered it?
Well if you or anyone has an idea what to do for the 3t40 vacuum line I am all ears. I was planning to just put a check valve in place.

3t40 doesnt have a vacume modulator, just a throttle cable.

nice to see you are still turboing the thing. id heard a lot of rumors about what you were doing, all from turning it dead stock, 3400 swap or hybrid, 3500 or 3900 swap, to a smaller turbo setup.

          good luck with the projects.

The goal is 240-280 wheel HP, enough to be fun, not enough to break crap.

                The "new" turbo is a T3 .48 A/R stage 2 wheel with a 46 trim T04E compressor.

The "previous" one was a T4 .7 A/R P trim with a T04 60-1 compressor. I'll take some pics, the old turbo is huge next to the new one, but different motors, different needs.

Nice work Curtis. How long do you think it'll take you to complete the MGB?

Well, I have the motor obviously, and I have the Sebring Body kit for the car. It's still running (the MG), I'm the 2nd owner and it has no rust (in a dent or 2 it's got surface rust). I was lucky to find a texas only car, so.

Probably once the Cav is done, I'll keep the MG running for a bit, get my seats in there so I can have fun driving it a little, then pull the motor out of it and sell that off, start collecting the remaining parts (TKO-600 tranny, clutch, bell housing, LSD for the 8. and then start. I'd say 8-12 months.

why are you going with the gen 2 top end and not take a couple easy extra hp and do a gen 3 top end?

The goal was 230 (low boost) to 280 wheel HP (maximum boost) both of which I can achieve with the Gen II heads. It also makes fabriation easier, since I can simply stick with the cast TGP manifolds and no extra fabrication, etc.
I am also basically setting up 2 cars at the same time, steve (Jux) already has his wagon, and 2 identical systems will be easier to tune (the car must pass emissions).

The heads have been worked on a little, but not a lot. Once again, this is going to be a daily driver, with A/C, no parts breaking, emissions legal car. I do not want to push more than 250 wheel HP 90% of the time, so I'll probably keep the car at 6-8 psi, and on rare occassion go to 10-11 psi.
