  • Alternator Installation

There are two black metal "bars" for lack of a better word that aide in mounting the alternator to the engine in a 96 3.1L Lumina. One has a nut welded to it and I know where it goes. Can someone tell me where the other "bar" mounts? A picture of the back side of the engine with alternator installed would be great. The bar has a flat on each end with a hole it the flat. The flats are rotated 90 degrees from each other, and bent probably 10 degrees.

    Thanks,
    Joel

They should bolt into the back of the case. There are typically 3 mounting points for GM

One Large one with a 10mm through bolt and the 2 small ones with 8mm bolts that go in the back of the alt case.

I looked at it for a good half hour last night and couldn't figure it out. Of course it was midnight and I was tired. I'll try it again tonight.

IIRC (from my Beretta setup), one of the black bars went from the case and bolted down to one of the plenum bolts. I can't remember where the other one bolted up. I haven't had them installed on my car for several years now. Too much of a hassle...

Alright, I figured it out. The pictures I took of the engine before I disassembled it came in handy. There are two bolts that bolt the upper intake to the lower intake that have studs out the top to put nuts on. These two go on the back left (when looking at the engine from the front of the car). There are two "black bars" that go to the alternator. One goes to each of these studs and then a nut on top. I hope this helps someone else down the road.
