  • Head Bolt sealant 3.4

I just read that the 2.8's need sealant on the outside 4 head bolts since they go into the coolant jacket.
I just put installed the heads on a 94 3.4 but did not seal the bolts.
Am I correct in thinking the 3.4 would be the same a the 2.8's

    Thanks

New headbolts are usually precoated with sealant.

Shouldn't do that either. Not on bolts.

They should be assembled with lube or if they go into water jackets then with thread sealer.

Bolts dont come loose if they are torqued right.

The best I car remember they go in with lube on the 660. A strong light shining into the water jacket will help you determine wether or not the head bolt holes go into the water jacket. If you cant see the light in the bolt hole then you dont need seaer. Check each one.

They do go directly into the water jacket, and you must use a sealer on the new head bolts.

Head bolts can stretch and is always a good idea to use new bolts.

Well I just checked on GM Service Infonet and it does not say to apply sealant to any head bolts on any 60* motor. I checked to make sure and on any smallblock application is says to use it like you should.

So I do not believe that the head bolts require sealent.

I've swapped heads on these engines at least 4 times and I have never used any sealant on the head bolts. All I've ever done is just rub some oil on the threads and torque them as directed.

Yea Brad I believe that is the correct way to do it.

I've got the heads off of my 3.4 F-body motor, as we speak.
The head bolt holes on mine do *not* go into the water jackets. I've checked them several times.

Having said that, I'm going to use the NAPA/Permatex teflon sealer on them anyway. When I pulled the heads off, I cold see where a little bit of water had gotten out of the water jacket and seeped into several of the bolt holes.

Quick hijack... Anyone know what torque specs the 3.4 bolts (felpro replacements) call for?
The Fiero shop manual says 66 lb.ft. for the 2.8.
My "How to Rebuild your 60* V6" book says 40 lbs (in steps) then an additional 1/4 turn.
                  Anyone have a 3.4 F-body shop manual?

I can check at the machine shop tomorrow if no one has the iron head 3.4 torque specs before then.
