  • properly testing ignition coils ?

    i was looking through my crappy haynes manual and i didnt see anything about coil resistances or how to check them also googled and didnt find anything about the resistances or hwo to check them

    can anyone explain the process?
    and does anyone know the proper resistances @ 0 and 70 Deg F temperature ?

    Thanks

    edit* guess the coil packs are the same for most gm models and apps ?

    set the ohmmeter on the rx1 setting
    place one lead on each primary terminal primary resistance should be less than 10 ohms
    set the ohmmeter on the rx1000 scale
    connect one lead to any primary terminal and the other lead in or on the coilsecondary tower secondary resistance should be between 5,000and 25,000ohms
    if the coil fails this test ,replace it

      i thought resistance between the tower coils was supposed to be between 5-7K ohms.

        yeah, mine read 5700 ohms at the secondaries when i checked them, i think 5-10k is within spec

                let me get this strait.........

                primary(paperclip stuck in bottom plug) to tower(Secondary) should read 5000-7000 ohms?

                or is it tower-to-tower 5000-7000 ohms?

                reason i ask is because im not getting anything, on primary-to-secondary tower test, on all 3 of my coils.....
