when i did my valve cover gaskets on my 86 cavy with the factory intake, i had to pull the upper and middle intake off to get the valve covers off. before starting the job id pick up a top end gasket set (without head gaskets), or else a pair of upper intake gaskets and a middle-lower intake gasket. you may not need to pull the intake, but it sucks when you start a job and cant finnish it cause of what wasnt expected.

anyways, why exactly are you replacing the valve covers??? or are you just changing the gaskets??? if its leaking andf you have the stamped steel covers, id recomend trying to find some fiero aluminum valve covers. they look a lot nicer aswell as use a neoprene gasket that will never leak. i had a lot of problems with the cork gaskets and stamped covers leaking, once i put the fiero valve covers on, never had a leak again. its a bit of a pricey way to fix it, but its a pain in the ass having to change gaskets all the time.
