  • 94 3100 wont start.. Ideas?

Okay guys, I am at the end of my rope..

..My 94 Cutlass Supreme won't start..

    Heres the story:

Last week, I was out and about, running around town and so forth, and the car was running fine.. No problms with it at all.. I got to my final destination to work on the Lumina project, and I was there for 3-5 hours.. I hopped back in the olds to head home, and I started it.. It foired just fine, but I put in reverse, and went to accelerate backward out the driveway.. The car stalled out on me right in the middle of the street.. I could start it subsequent times after but it would idle very rough and eventually die out.. It has been sitting there ever since..

..It will crank and crank just fine, and I have spark coming from it (I hooked a plug to a wire, and I can hear it sparking in a regular pattern..) I changed the fuel filter just becasue it probably needed it, but now it is leaking gas out of the rusted ass fitting that hooks into the filter.. Here is a list of what i have changed on it:

    I have changed the coils
    Changed the ICM
    CHanged Fuel Filter
I was going to try an idle relearn, however it wont stay running long enough for me to do that.. The idle relearn takes I believe 15-20 mins, and I am luck to get 45 seconds of idle out of it..

I am getting spark, and i can hear the fuel pump kick in.. But, here's something I noted: I don't hear it when I first turn the key.. I only hear it after I try cranking it and it does nothing.. What else could my problem be? Any help you all can give me would be much appreciated.. I really need my car back.. Thanks..

I didn't replace teh o-rings when I changed my fuel filter, but I did put some oil on them. Might want to replace or oil the o-rings and fix that fuel leak first!

Then, I'd check the FPR. Take the vacuum hose off and see if you smell gas. The fuell pump will not always make a sound if you have recently tried firing it up. Take the key out and wait 10 secs or more, then put it to on, and listen for the pump. It should whine then stop. Then you try firing it again.

I don't think a faulty cam shaft position sensor would make it die like that, but it will certianly make it run like crap. It helps control fueling.
Even if you are getting spark, it *could* be the Crank Pos Sensor in the block (not by the crankshaft pulley). Does it ever fire back up after the car has sat for a while and cooled off? If so then it's likely that. I've done mine twice, get a good one, not autozone $11 crap one. Learned my lesson on that, lasted less than a year. It's hard to get to and you kind of have to do it by feel.

Also take out the IAC motor and see if it's ok. If it hasn't siezed up from being dirty or something.

Uhm I can't thikn of anythign else off my head that's easy to check.

It will fire, but it stsalls out after a minute or less.. I am going to check the Injectors/fuel rail tomorrow, and also, I was wondering this over tacos (For some reason)

Can a fuel pump suffer from "too low of pressure"? I ask because it seems to run OK, but when I tap the accelerator, it chokes itself and dies instantly.. I thought it was coils, but the thing sparks fine, and yes, I have the right plugs to the right coils.. lol..

Have you done a fuel pressure check? Throwing parts at a car is expensive!
how long will it run at idle? does it only die when you try to give it gas?

Make sure your getting propr fuel pressure before you go any further.

and a, I've seen a buick 3.8 run at 45 MPH with 9psi of fuel pressure. It shouldn't have but it did.

A "true" High flow converter, straight pipe.
Low/No flow EGR valve, block off plate.
Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

Check fuel pressure first. If it's ok, check your TPS.

The fuel pump sounded like hell.. It had always been loud, so I never put a thought into it.. As I was testing and checking, the pump sounded a little different, so I swapped it, and she works fine.. Fired right up, and the pump is almost silent.. HELLz yea.. Thanks for all the help guys!

Now.. TIme to get back on track with the Turbo 3.4
