  • took the firebird to the shop, they told me it was a pos

well the firebird finally quit running the other day right in the middle of town, so i took it to a mechanic buddy of mine & he so kindly let me know that it is a pos lol. the timing chain is stretched, the coil packs & distributer are junk, it has some wiring problems, and possibly other problems. needless to say this was a very disheartening thing to hear, but rather than sell it for a couple hundred bucks & be done with it, im hoping that he can fidn the problems & fix em (maybe then i'll be able to get the mileage and power that i had with my old 3.1 luminas-god be willing). wish me luck guys!

Damn, thats not good. Have you considered putting a new cam in there since the chain is getting replaced? Wouldn't be that much more work if the bearings are good, which they should be.

haha no i hadnt, but im pretty sure a cam is like $500, right? i havent looked at them in a while & might go check some out now, but right now im possibly facing 4-500 in just having it fixed which means i have to sell my quad & dirtbike, but maybe if i get enough grad money ill put one in it.

Should be closer to 250-300 with new lifters. CHeck ebay, as they are on there sometimes for real cheap.

my full comp cams sk kit (cam, lifter, springs, locks, retainers, timing chain and valve seals) was only $300 canadian. a cam/lifter/timing set would be a lot cheaper.

damn man let me know where you scored a whole cam setup like that for so cheap. my heads are getting torn down for a collapsed lifter, and id like to put as much performance stuff in there while its torn down to save the money of having to get it taken apart in the first place to get them installed.

Darkside... you won't find a price like that for your engine since its a 3100.

no_doz... I'd look at Summit and Jegs for their cam kits. Should be pretty close to that price.

3100...3400... same cam. But much different than the 2.8/3.1/3.4 setup.

Christ on a cracker people... this feller has yet to even get his car to run decent, and ya'll are trying to sell him on a long duration cam... for cryin' out loud!

I'd fix the timing chain, ignition, wiring, etc. and make the thing run right before I'd even consider modifying it. Putting in an aftermarket cam will only introduce MORE problems into an engine that ain't runnin' right in the first place.

So what if you end up taking the radiator and timing cover out twice? Better to waste a couple hours and a few gaskets than end up with a new cam worth a few hundred $$ in a car that still runs like crap.

                            your so right x2

forget that pos 3.1 go a carbed 350 and it'll run way better and outperform that 3.1 anyday

hell he asked, not like we recomended it. a "new" cam isnt necesarliy a upgraded cam.
