  • '96 3.1 Starts but then dies issue

I am having some issues with my '96 Grand Am GT work car. For the past several weeks the car would occaisonally die upon startup. Start the car and then go to put into gear and it would die. Restart it and all is fine. Fastforward to yesterday and the car did it again. But when I went to restart the car there was nothing. The key wouldnt come out of the ignition switch, and everything that is switched 12V power was dead.

For some odd reason, the small fuse panel next to and below the battery had the 60 AMP IGN fuse blown. WHy would a fuse this big blow?

We changed the fuse in the car, and now is where the fun begins. The car will start and run for a period of 1-2 seconds, then dies. Doesnt stutter or stumble, just dies. It will keep doing this until the battery goes dead.

I checked the fuel pressure, 45psi with key on, and about 36 when the car dies. It has spark, fuel pressure, etc etc as the car does start and run.

Does anyone have any ideas on this wonderful problem

    Any help would be appreciated.......

I would check for security codes. When a GM starts and dies imediatly 90% of the time the car thinks its been stolen and will kill itself everytime. Go to your GM dealer and tell them the problem and they should be able to give you info on how to reset the security codes.
