  • Stupid Question ... Firing Order

So my neighbor has an early 90's Camaro with a 3.1 in it ... just wondering if the firing order in the RWD version is the same as the FWD version ... (1-2-3-4-5-6)

Also, on the distributor on that motor - where is the #1 plug located (or should I just pop the cap and turn the engine up to TDC)

and Finally ... the #1 plug is on the passanger side of the engine bay ... right?

I know these seem like stupid questions, but I'd rather ask the stupid questions then fuck somethin up with trial and error.

    Firing order...

is on a 3.1 and 3100 1-2-3-4-5-6. Starting on the passenger side facing the firewall is #1, #2 is passenger side front, so on and so on.

Hmmm. I still say search it.

That would be the right orientation. Usaully the #1 cylinder is a bit further forward than the #2 cylinder. That is an easy way to tell, but the timing sometimes is taken off a different cylinder. Like my Jeep. Timed off number #8.

okay ... that's what I thought - but I wanted to make sure before I started diggin' into it with the neighbor.

It's got a distributor on it - so there's no waste-spark ... just one coil.

got everything working on it properly - had to pull the distributor and reclock it, then re-time the thing properly - took a bit of time, but nothin' we couldn't handle in a quick afternoon with a few beers - I just wanted to make sure I had the firing order proper.

Still only 3 cylinders get the advance to fire every rev. 1 and 4 where 1 gets advance, since it is a rotor 2 and 5, then 3 and 6... Which mean 1, 2 and 3 are the only cylinders that get advance to fire 4, 5 and 6 follow each batch... I also forgot to move 2and 5 in front on 3 and 6 doh.

I would then be 1-4, 2-5, 3-6. Notice I did say coil as in not coils...

Don't think I'm really following you.

the pistons on top-dead-center at the same time yes are 1-4, 2-5 and 3-6 ... but as 1 is on it's compression stroke, 4 is on it's exhaust stroke, same for 2 & 5, and for 3 & 6 and Vice-Versa, as 4 is on it's compression stroke, 1 is on it's exhaust stroke, same for 5 & 2, and 6 & 3. The coil charges and discharges 3 times per rev - and the rotor is only one-sided meaning it will only fire into the one hole at a time, no waste spark ... so the wires on the distributor will go to each cylinder in order - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - and nothing more fancy then that. So knowing that the coil-fire (waste spark setup) is 1-4, 2-5, and 3-6 is information that isn't needed with a distributor setup. There is a coil with this distributor setup, but it's not a "coil fire" setup.
