How to drop oil pan

Anyone idea how much it would cost for a shop to do?

What exactly are you doing? Its not like a shop will drop the pan and then you can take the car somewhere to work on it. Its hard to price something out when the extent of the work is unknown.

And in reality, it could probably be done in a driveway, if you wanted to take the time to do it.

well i had an engine overheat on me, but i'm not 100 % sure if it locked up.because the starter died shortly afterward. I can turn the engine by hand , but it made a little clicking sound like it threw a rod or something. So i figured I could drop the pan and check for bits and pieces or shavings before I bother putting another starter on it. I just need to know for sure if its toast basically, and everything else checks out fine on it.

Drain the oil and look for metal particles. Its not a guarantee, but it at least would give you an initial look into what happened. With any internal issue that would cause "bits and pieces", there will be trace amount of material that will come out with the oil when it is drained. It nothing comes out, I'd venture to say that your internals are fine.
