  • Turn Signals!?

    Hey Everyone,

We have a 1996 Ciera and are having problems with the turn signals. Neither the left nor right signal works. When you turn either side on, not only do they not flicker they do not even illuminate. The problem is happening in both the front and back bulbs. Also the dash arrows do not light up when you turn the signals on. But if you turn on the hazard lights all the lights (front and back) light up and so does the dash cluster. Does anyone know what the cause of this is? I have checked the bulbs but have had no luck, could it be the flasher?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

    Thanks

Check the fuses too. Some models have a seperate fuse for the blinker circuit. Then check the flasher by swapping the hazards flasher out with it and see which one works.

Sorry I did not add that I have already checked the fuse. It is seperate and it is fine. Are the hazards and signal flashers the same? Do you know how to get to the flashers (are they under the passenger dash)? Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know where they are on the ciera. Sorry but maybe someone else can add to that.

I was guessing it's bad switch. Probably will have to change that whole lever for the turn signal, and whatever else is on it. Or perhaps theres a bad wire in there.. Power from ignition or something. You'll have to tear it apart to find out. The Hazards will work with your key off, the turn signals wont, so they should be on seperate systems.

Turn signal flasher and Hazard flasher are different. Flasher is where I would start, since it is cheapest. I suspect that. Spend a few bux, (12), and get a Haynes manual. Should show location. And it is handy to have.

Check voltage at the bulb receptical at any one of the corner main dual filament bulb sockets and see if you get a pulsing DC wave form first when the signal is active.

In most cases a standard flasher is used in either socket it just so happens that the hazards are used less so it may appear different. Uniformally the flasher is only a bi metal circuit breaker.

If you hazards work but your turn signals don't then I would guess the flasher first. When my blinkers were messed up I could turn the blinker on and then wiggle the hazard switch to get it to turn on, so i knew my switch was bad. You could try the same thing.
