  • 3400 Intake Gaskets-Which are better?

I have a 2001 Monte Carlo with the 3400 V-6 and it has the dreaded intake leaking anti-freeze. After reading this board it seems that 2 brands of gaskets are being used to permanently solve this problem.

From GM I have a TSB #03-06-01-010B that lists an "improved" gasket part #89017279 along with new long and short intake bolts. List is about $60 plus the bolts at about $4 each.

FelPro makes a "Problem Solver" gasket kit. Part #MS98003T. List about $75. I looked at this in the store and it seems to have a very nice metal reinforced gasket and even comes with it's own small tube of silicone sealer.

I want to use the Fel-Pro set but can anyone tell me the difference or what they use?
    Thanks for the help!

If the Felpro gasket has the metal inserts around the bolt holes then go for it.

Sometimes the folks at those cheap autoparts stores aren't the sharpest tacks around. I got that same set MS98003T from Advance, but I was told at first that they couldn't get it (it was in the computer, but the dumbass said he couldn't order it). I called the next day, talked to a manager and gave them that part number- they had it for me a couple days later.

The fel-pro gasket is all-metal. It is very nice. I got mine at www.rockauto.com for about $75 w/ shipping. Also comes with valve cover gaskets, EGR gasket, etc.

That's a hellofadeal. That set cost me $105, and I had a hell of a time finding it. It doesn't come with an egr gasket though. You gotta buy a few more things besides the set. See my Holy Intake Gaskets board.

The 3500 lower intake gasket wont work on a 3400. The plenum gaskets will but the lower to head won't match up.

The 3500 lower wont bolt up to 3400 heads, so there is no way the gasket is gonna match up right either. Ok...it bolts up but it doesn't line up with the intake ports properly:P

Those metal plenum gaskets are HUGE! I dunno if gasket matching to that size is a good idea or not. Something else to mess with later on with dynomation. It can compare intake runner taper, and those gaskets would allow it to be opened up quite a bit.
