  • Which oil Pan

I have an 83 Firebird 2.8 HO VIN(L). My oil pan is leaking around at the rear of the block ( the engine rebuilder did not torque the pan down, torqueing the pan did not fix the leak.) So, whilst fixing the leak I would also like to replace the dented up oil pan with a new one, but I noticed that there seems to be two different types---

a first design type which uses sealant
    and
a second design type which uses a seal.

I'm not sure which one is in my car, I know there is sealant around the rear of the pan, but what I would like to know is if the pans are interchangable? In other words are the engine blocks the same with the only diference being the pan and gasket?

thanks for your asstance in advance.

get a metal-reinforced silicone gasket. dont think the pan matters just different gaskets.

and 2.8HO lol, kinda like the 5.0HO that they had

      RE: Which oil Pan

There is a yearly difference in pans. '82 to '85 had a lip at the front that had bolts into the timing cover. '86(.5)+ did not, there was just a seal that was squished to for a seal.

In the back of the motor and the front you need to put a couple dabs of RTV where the block meets the back cap and the block meets the timing cover.
