My first post here...good to be among GM fans
Anyway, I am currently replacing the head gaskets on an 88 Beretta GT that I recently acquired for the right price. 2.8, auto. After I got it tore down, I saw that this motor is in really bad shape. Grime and buildup is covering EVERYTHING in there. The result of several missed oil changes i guess. I noticed that one of the lifters isnt riding the camshaft quite right. You can see where the lifter is riding the lobe...its prolly 1/8" wide....or maybe 20% of the area it SHOULD be riding. (these measurements are very approximate...i will happily provide pics) The rest of the lobe is covered with grime that has obviously been there for awhile. So i pulled the lifter, and there is no obvious external damage. What could cause this problem? A bad camshaft? Or is something awry inside the lifter? I did notice that the lifter was extremely hard to remove, if that makes any difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
