  • 92 Camaro RS 3.1 won't restart-new car for my daughter help

    Hi all!

I am new to the forum and need some help. We just bought a 1992 Chevy Camaro RS with a 3.1 V-6. The car starts the first time, runs rough at idle, but drives nice. Then after sitting, even for a few hours, it won't re-start. I am pretty good with older cars, but don't know much about the newer stuff. The car is not throwing off any codes. You can really smell gas when trying to re-start the car, even though I have not depressed the gas pedal. It had the plugs, cap, wires, fuel filter, serpentine belt, etc. replaced less than 10,000 miles ago, it passed smog in June 2004, and the timing is set right. Any help or ideas anyone will provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Throw an old fashion spark tester and check for adequate spark.

How was the timing checked? You did remove the EST Bypass wire right?

We just got the car yesterday and the reciepts show the tune up parts were replaced and the timing was checked. I will check it myself tomorrow and post an update. It just seemed so odd that it started so well, then wouldn't start until I left it alone overnight. Thanks for giving me a starting point.

First thing to remember on the newer cars is that there are a number of electronics on it. Since there are a lot of electronics, our starting point should always be to make sure the battery cables are tight. I'm not sure where you are, but I know where I am it's gotten fairly cold out (could be colder still) and batteries dont like cold. I'd suggest going to AutoZone or somewhere and having a load test done on it. May want to check the alternator while you're there.
