Ohh.... something to do with the stamped rockers hitting the bottom of the intake manifold and carving out some of the aluminum... The lifters can only do some much destruction before they themselves destruct! I have pics of the aftermath if you care to see....

Sure, that is the kinda thing I am worried about. My motor used to make this same tapping sound when it was cold. I realized this the other day when I started it in the cold and thought there was nothing wrong until I thought about it and realized I was just used to hearing that noise in a real cold start up.

it is normal for these engines to have some valvetrain noise in it cold.
it is the end result of the design of the camshaft with its pressed on lobes and hollow camtube.
you will always get cold start valvetrain noise from the 3X00 engines, just good old GM engineering at work there.Colin

Well that's cool then but I was hoping that was a sign that the lifters were going and that the coolant leak had just killed them with gummed up oil. I can't think of anything else that would be making this noise. It is uniform for it isn't like someone dropped something in there and like I said before I went by the manual this is the last thing I could figure that would make this noise.
