  • 304L valve adjustments needed

Looking for information on adjusting the valve lash on a 3.4L V6 that has 20K miles on it. The engine was purchased new in Mar 04 and put in a 1995 Jeep Cherokee.

Oh yeah: it's push rod with a 38 DGES Weber Carb and Edelbrock hi flow intake manifold. Standard exhaust manifold (will be buying a set of headers soon)

The engine has a little valve tick and I was told that since I bought it brand new (crate engine from Scoggin Dickey Parts Center), I should adjust the valves.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    RE: 304L valve adjustments needed

Is it the 3.4L GMPP crate engine? Those engines are bad for loud lifter/valvetrain tick noise.

I know as I put one in a guys S10 and he kept bringing it back to me whining about the noise, Which In my opionion was not at all bad. I adjusted the valves twice for him to keep him happy, and still no change.

    The adjustment procedure is:

With number one piston on the firing position at TDC install the rockers on the studs, the valves that can be adjusted are:
    EXHAUST: 1, 2, 3
    INTAKE: 1, 5, 6

Tighten in the adjusting nuts until all lash is removed. This can be determined by rotating the pushrod while turning in the adjusting nut. Or by moving the pushrod up and down in the seat of the lifter/rocker arm and feeling the pushrod to rocker/lifter clearance. You want to remove all slack and clearance between these three pieces. Once the play (zero lash ) has been removed, Turn in the adjusting nut 1 and One-half turn (this is stock GM spec, I usually do 1/2 turn of preload) to center the lifter plunger. Now crank the engine over one complete revolution to number four firing position. These valves can now be adjusted:

    EXHAUST: 4, 5, 6
    INTAKE: 2, 3, 4
