  • Loud Knocking after replacing broken head bolt...Update

    Hi all,

About 3 weeks ago I had coolant spewing into my oil, thought it was a head gasket but it turned out to be a broken head bold. Got the heads refinished with a valve job.

Got it all back together and running but i am hearing constant knocking.
Check out this video, you can hear the sound clearly.

    VIDEO

I took the front valve cover off and noticed a valve wasnt even opening. could this sound be comming from the lifters, rods, and rockerarms not building up sufficient pressure because the lifters got clogged with all that coolant. I will be taking off the intake manifold and cleaning the lifters out.

I just want to know if i will be waisting my time and if something worse happened that caused that head bolt to break. Requiring me to remove the engine.

Thanks for any help on this one!

If a valve isn't opening, you either have a worn down cam lobe or a collapsed lifter. You will need to remove the lower intake and inspect it but its either those 2 or a broken pushrod.

It could also be a broken valve guide, allowing the pushrod to slide out of the rocker. Kind of sounds similar to mine when I broke a valve guide.

        Two broken lifters

The arrow is pointing to the bad one, it was alot more pushed in, but you can see how loose it is.

So what now??? Can i put new/used lifters in without changing the cam? I know this is not recommended, however i do not want to take the engine out and i only need it running for the winter. Will i kill the cam if i throw new lifters in there??? guides look good no grooves. When i took the lifter apart there was alot of dark oil that was thick inside, i think this is what did it.

Looks like they went dry after you removed the heads. Always make sure they are prime after removal and reinstall.

New lifter and push-rod is all.

Oh i primed the engine driving the oil pump with a drill, i think it was the coolant and crap that was in there.

Replaced the lifters, and now no noise, idles ok but no throttle response.

That might prime the lifters, but the only sure way is to soak them in motor oil upon removal with the little hole facing up.
