  • 1994 cuttlass runability problems

I have a 1994 oldsmobile Cuttlass supreme witha 3100 and 93thousand miles. It has a really odd missing type problem. It seems to be the worst when the engine is cold or it is really cold outside. It usually only happens when i try to accelerate. The engine will start to accelerate then it looses power for a split second and it will start to drive away then do it again until i'm movin alond at about 40MPH. Sometimes the engine will idle real rough at a standstill and the pauses between power busrts will be longer than usual. I'm pretty sure its not the plug wires because i can power brake untill the engine is at about 2500RPM and it won't miss a beat. And that would be when the ignition system would fail because that puts the biggest load on it that it will ever recieve. I put on a set of new plugwires and plugs. I also put on all new coil packs and ignition control module.(before i tried the power brake test) That didn't really change the problem at all. I listened to the fuel pump and couldn't hear anything unusual. Plus I have never heard of a fuel pump working the not working consistently when the engine is cold. The only other two things that i can think of is injectors not working properly or maybe the O2 sensors are bad. What about the idle valve are they a common problem with GM stuff because they are a common problem with BMW's but the symptoms that i have are not consistant with the symptoms that BMW's commonly have when thier idle valve quit. I tried to give as much info as possible.Any possible lead to the problem right now would be great so thanks in advance.

Could be a number of things.. is your SES light on??

When really affected my car was when I cleaned the IAC/throttlebody with throttlebody cleaner. Car was stalling/irradic idling before -> rarely stalling and idle near perfect. I recently changed my chip so that it only uses the MAP sensor instead of the MAP and MAF sensor (I don't beleive your car has a MAF, but the MAP could be going bad)? Reason for this is because the MAF sensor was broke (causing it to run rich and clog the IAC/dirty throttlebody)
If its running bad in the cold maybe the IAT in the airbox is dead, cause thats basically what its job is.

Could be a number of other things that I have not had to deal with on my car, hopefully others will be of help.

If your SES engine light comes on go to walmart or whereever and get a GM code reader ($20 canadian).

Thats what is irratating me is that none of my lights come on.Even after the car stalled just from putting it in gear.No lights. And the frist thing i did was clean the IAC.And it was a little dirty but it didn't really make a dramatic difference.Oh yeah and you are correct my car does not have a MAF. I had huntch that it could have been the IAT. So tonight i'll let the car cool all the wal down start it up and put a hair drier in the intake boot and see if there is a difference.

My 95 Pontiac GA GT 3100 has done since it had 25,000 miles it now is at 155,000. Nobody has ever been able to correct...so I just live with it. Only occurs when sub-freezing and engine cold, after a minute it is fine. It doesn't do it all the time. If anybody knows I'm all ears.
