  • some q's from newbie

Hello all. I'm new to the site but not to the 60degree v6.
my question is this; 1993 Corsica 3.1L. these engines have a coil pack instead of a distributor and Gm cheaped out when they changed this and kept using the same manifolds. So, where the distributor should be is that a threaded plug or a something similar to a frost plug? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as i have to get get this oil leak fixed, it keeps getting worst

Change the O-ring and then take some permatex and seal the plug up. there is no need to get in there.

If and when you change the O-ring install a smallblock chevy distributor base gasket. Extra insurance for teh future.

The permatex trick does work. You can loosen and pull up the top of the drive gear and wash the area with brake clean squirt in some gasket maker and clamp it back down.

yep thats what i did to both my w-bodys but i used parts cleaner (same difference though) i did it like 6 years ago and i just checked it to verify, there's no leak on either. so yes it does work.

Actually i'm planning on steam cleaning the engine(very carefully) before i start and using parts cleaner to clean up around there before i pull it out replace the o-ring, reinstall, then maybe forma gasket(high temp)???? Never really considered the Permatex though.

You know, I've replaced the gasket only without all of these extra sealing steps and not a had a problem. The Distributer gasket can actually cause leakage, due to deterioration, and it also makes the gear wear in a new area that cam prematurely wear out the gear on the cam or oil pump drive.

I'll always be a firm believer in replacing the O-ring and nothing else added.

I didn't mean to confuse you but permatex makes Form-A-Gasket. we just call it permatex. even though nowadays permatex makes hand cleaner and other crap too.
