  • Some car problems.....

    My car is a 1995 3100.
I replaced the serpentine belt and water pump. I'm running about 30% coolant which is fine. Hooked it up to the scanner and the coolant temp sensor seems to be working. It got up to 208 degrees and stayed there. The manaul said the thermostat opens completely at 208 so that means it working within perameters. The car goes in and out of closed loop even though the temperature is where it needs to be. The EGO sensor has never been replaced after 110,000 miles. It also seems to be sluggish at times. I'm thinking this may cause the car to switch from closed to open loop. The fan relay also seems to be out since I put voltage to the fan and it came on. And the coolant sensor measured within variying ohms when in while the car cooled off and worked when I had it hooked up to the diagnostic. Any help would be appreciated. It runs rich also. A stuck injector?

      Coolant issues.

If it is not the injector, look at the heater core. I have a 1995 Grand Am SE, 3100sfi and it always ran at the 195 level. Than it started to run at 210-215. Pressured checked the system, it met accceptable levels but i still wasn't staisfied. replaced the water pump, cleaned out the egr, helped some, but still at 205-210. Finally took off the heater core hoses, had all kinds of crap in them, and i went ahead and rpl them and the heater core. ran at 195-200 after that, just like when it was new. I am finding that GM's levels of "accteptable" seem to really say " as long as Chernoble is not happening under the hood, your ok" Any ways, thats what my coolant prob. was.
Don\'t hate me because I\'m horny.

        Didn't think about the...

heater core, it did go bad and I put sealer in it. I flush and block off the heater core first.

          My car passed smog...

Yes!. So it's all smogged and ready to go. The O2 sensor was bad and keeping it from closing loop. I tested 72 on HC's. The limit is 82. I know I have a leaking injector but figured it would pass anyhow. Now that I don't have to worry about smog for 2 years. Let the mods begin.
