  • Help:3400 Piston/rod orientation?

Can't find any marking on pistons to indicate engine front. No notch, no arrow, nothing! The only distinquishing feature is on the underside of piston where one side of the pin boss is different than the other side. I know these are pin offset pistons so it has to make a difference.

Relative to rod orientation: I have always used the groundrule that the rod bearing tangs face the oil pan rails. Is this correct for the 3400? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Have you cleaned the top of the piston to look for a mark? Sometimes it is under the carbon. It was like that on my VW.

On my 3.4L I marked the rods before removal so never had to worry.
