I was driving my 96 cutlass with the 3.1L the other day and I noticed the service engine light come on. I really didn't think much of it, but after I looked at it I noticed that the a/c clutch was grinding when it was first engaged. Then I took it for a ride and noticed it was jerking back and forth a lot. It almost felt like the car was going to choke off, but not that bad... hard to explain it. My question is, will the a/c clutch itself (or rather a bad clutch bearing, as that is what I assume is wrong with the clutch) cause the service engine soon light to come on? The only other possible thing I can think of that it could be is a on the way to being/burnt coil pack. I know that the SES light is just a dummy light but I think that something may be wrong in this case. I don't have a diagnostic machine to pull the codes, but I don't want to invest a lot of money into the car either because it already has 200k miles on it and is not in excellent shape. I would stil be willing to fix something small on the car though because it has been so good to me so far. If anyone has had this same problem or can offer a suggestion it would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. Oh yeah, and would anyone happen to know how I can reset the light and see if it comes back on or not? Pulling the battery cable did not do it as I believe it is OBD-II.
