  • My Starter.

Okay, first off, I know this thread doesn't belong here, I'm just trying to get this problem fixed relatively quickly, as I am selling my car in a few days and this is the pushrod forum that gets the most hits.

I need to know where my starter is, it doesn't seem to be working. Everytime I try to turn on the car, i hear the fuel pump go on, and when i turn the key to start the car, it just buzzes really loud. I'm assuming it's the starter. Battery holds volts, so I know its not them. Battery posts/cables are very clean and uncorroded. I don't know . . . is it the solenoid or the starter? Something dealing with the chip? The security light isn't coming on when I'm trying to start it, so that can't be it, can it? When I first got the car and got a key made without the chip (stupid, eh?) the car made the same noise when I tried to start it. I have another key with a chip in it and already tried it - same buzzing.

So, I just need to know what the problem is soon! And I'm curious if I would be able to do it myself (basic tools, little mechanical know-how). My parents want to send the car to DOBBS to get this fixed! They said they'd rather me pay 150 dollars in labor for a 50 dollar problem than having myself or one of my brother's friends (very mechanically inclined) to do it for like 10 bucks (they seem to hate my brother and his friends, long story). Please reply soon! Thank you!

    Where the starter is hey.

Under the car bottom front of the car. Its by the mating surfaces between the engine block and the transmission.

Here is the starter on a 3400 http://60degreev6.com/pics/family_tree/20043400.jpg

In that pic it is the brass coloured thing near the bottom. On your 89 (I asume because of your name) it will be larger and black but int the same location.

Yes... my dad is contemplating me taking it to a CHAIN GARAGE!! Ah! Shouldn't I just be able to take it off myself if I get a jackstand or should i be able to maneuver my arms down in there and unbolt it and stuff? I've got normal tools. He's afraid of me fucking something up. I'm just taking it off to get it tested at Autozone and then I'll probably end up buying a new starter or solenoid.

Thanks for your help, betterthanyou. What do you think the problem is?
