  • 3100sfi charging system

    My sisters 97 grandam has the charging wire from the alternator hooked directly to the positive side of the battery. Correct me if I am mistaken, but is this wire not suppose to go do your starter? If this is the case, where on the starter would it go to?

    Thanks;

    you are correct. there is a big stud on the starter that should have a few wires (fuseable links) on it. there is also a small one with a single purple wire going to it for the ground. Just the two studs, big one for + cable.

    I've seen some cases where people with big stereo's run an additional cable from the alternator to the starter or + terminal on the battery as well.

      That purple wire is not a ground, that is the start wire, 12 volts on that wire is what engages the starter.

      Some newer vehicles have the main charge lead run to the fuse box or battery.

      But whether the main charge wire runs to the batery terminal on the starter or the battery drectly, it is serving the same purpose.
