  • decking the block on 3100

I took the 3100 M block to the machine shop.
The initial problem was blown head gaskets and at 92,000 miles worn out.
Machinest wants to deck the block to ensure we can get the heads to seal.
The heads will also have to be cut to get them straight.
Anyone have any idea of max decking and head cutting we can do with out creating a piston to valve interference problem?
The book says about .001 (nothing) is max, if I read it correctly.
The machinest is a hot-rod engine builder, he says deck to clean up the block, cut to clean up the heads and cut the PISTONS for clearence if required at fitting, appears to be plenty of meat in the outter edge of the pistons.
    Cranked turned .020.
    Block bored .030.
    Blocked decked .005.
    Head cut .005.
    New pistons cut as required.

RE: decking the block on 3100

People have decked the heads .020" without any issues, so you should be able to do up to that combination between the block and heads and still not have any clearance issues.

Block has been decked a "few" thousands to clean it up. Shouldn't make any difference. Heads were also cut .008. I Probably will run some clay to verify sufficient clearance.
