I have a 92' 3.1 MPFI lumina i got it from an elderly woman... i got it with 39000 on it in the fall of 2002 now in the beginning of 2004 i have 56000 on it... i was wondering how long it would take for a rebuild... my question hass been answered... and makes me feel pretty damn good about my engine. i do have a question though...how bad does high rpm hurt this engine... such at fooring it at the a light and going though the gears... i beat a mid 90's mustang six cylender the other day... i was just wondering what kind of abuse it too much... i mean i dont do it often or anything... i was just thinking about it.
Damn, so you basically drove all over LI! I just ran my carfax and nothing came up. Infact, the last mileage it shows is when I bought it in early 2000. Ive put less than 30,000 on it since then.
Back on topic.......sorta...........You can put some serious miles on these motors before in depth maintence is needed. Just do regualr oil changes and regular maintenence, they'll pretty much last forever
Every shop I have talked to said the 2.8 has a POS bottom end and will not see over 100k miles. What is going on? Is there a weak spot to these engines that kills them early? Something like overheating?
We'll start with a 1992 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 I had.
Bought with 59,000 miles. Engine had been replaced once already, this engine had about 30,000 miles on it. At 108,500, something went big time...figure it cracked a block. Replaced with a GM long block assembly. At 121,xxx miles, it developed a serious rod knock. Sold the car at 124,xxx miles, and the engine expired three months later.
Fast forward to the 1997 Cutlass Supreme I currently drive.
Purchase the car with 47,000 miles on it. I drove the car for a while, got it to about 95,000 miles, when the lower intake gasket failed, and less than 20 miles later, it spun a bearing, and cracked a block. Installed a salvage yard engine from a N-body, with about 65,000 miles on it. Fast forward to an odometer reading of 130,000 miles now, and it's got a valvetrain knock in it. It's WAY down on power, and fuel mileage.
I have parted ways with my 1992 GP with a 3.4 DOHC engine, and this car isn't much further behind...although, I'm keeping it.

1997 Olds CS 4-door S/C - 183,527 miles
1999 Chevrolet Lumina 3100 - Wife took it at 158,340 miles
1989 Volvo 740GL Wagon 2.3 8v - 232,050 miles
thats almost 21K a year WOW ..... 7 oil changes a year... thats gotta suck , congrats to you, thats quite an achivement
My mom drives ~700 miles a week starting about 2 years ago. That means an oil change every month. Her 2000 SSEi has 105k on it (last time I checked). She bought it brand new in August of 2000 and put ~30k on it the first year and a half and then about 2 years ago she switched jobs and drives a LOT of miles. 21k a year isn't a lot. 12-15k a year is average.

I'm working a temporary assignment out of town, 200 miles round trip, 4X a week. My S-10 has 93K miles on it and I average 24 mpg, almost all of it highway miles.
When I first got this truck (carbed 2.8L, automatic, 3.42 rear axle) the best I could do is 17 mpg. Since then I've put on cat-back 2-1/4" exhaust super turbo muffler, advanced the timing several degrees, rebuilt the carb, fixed all the vacuum leaks, restricted the EGR flow, pitched the air manifold heating/gasket element, and keep my highway speeds to about 72 mph or less. Faster than that, this baby starts downshifting and sucking alot more gas to keep up. Engine and drivetrain appears to holdingup well except for a drippy rear main seal. I run 10W-30 dino oil and stock AC sparkplugs.
151,xxx miles on my 96 3100.
It's held up really well. Repaced everything on the serpenteen belt, but hey thats not much.
Trans was rebuild at 60,000 miles, but that was because it was a rental car and people beat on transmissions.
