  • Problem***My Car Smoke***Need Help

    Hi everybody,

I have a problem. Monday I remove my plenum on my Lumina 1992 3.1L for the first time. I clean my plenum with CLR or if you like Motor Cleaner. I change my EGR gasket, TB gasket, Plenum gasket. I change the PCV valve. So today I put back together. Everything is fine but when I start the car after 2min the car begin to smoke, and the Idle was not regular. He smoke from the exaust manifold. They have a lot of smoke. But I dont know why he smoke like that. Before I remove the plenum the car did not smoke.Somebody can help me??

    Thanks Frank

You have smoke coming from the exhaust manifold? Like an exhaust leak? Did you change both plenum gaskets or just the upper?

What kind of smoke is it? Normal black smoke or "white smoke"?

BTW Frank... I love the grammar.

The cleaner you used to clean up the plenum or whatever you were doing, must of gotten onto the manifold .. When engine heats up, your exhaust heats up, and therefore is just burning off the chemicals you used and got onto the exhaust.

If thats the case, it should dissappear after awhile. Have you ever gotten oil on an exhaust manifold? Same thing. Just takes time.

        --------------------------
About the idle .. you disconnected battery or the IAC and the engine just needs to relaern the idle .. their is an idle relearn procedure here somewhere, or just letting it idle / drive it, the ECM should correct the signal.

Hope some of this info fits your case

          haha....

Je parle francais pour trois ans...

but my french is horrible these days. I went to france a couple years ago, but a lot of the people in Paris speak English, so I didn't have much trouble getting around.

BTW - If you got anything on the manifolds they will smoke ( as was already stated)... easy way to tell is to actually take a big breath of the smoke coming from the manifolds... then take a deep breath of the exhaust coming out of the tail pipe... they probably do not smell the same...

Did you use any sealant on the gaskets or did you put them in dry?

          Au revoir mon amis...

          sorry... its been a while. = )

So yesterday I changed my IAC for a new one and now my car do the same thing. The car stop smoking but the idle is not regular. Now my car give me the code 33(MAP sensor=signal voltage is high during engine idle.
(Note: Engine misfire or unstable idle may cause this code). My car have a unstable idle. First question: Where is the MAP sensor(with pic if it possible) and second: What I need to do to repair the map sensor??

                  Thanks Frank
