  • new memcal prom and airbox

I put a prom from a 89? Grand Prix 2.8 that doesn't have MAF, so my car seems to be running better and I don't need to replace the stupid MAF anymore. The service engine light doesn't come on (well, at least for 10 min or so anyways...and then about 5-10 min each time I turn it off and restart it - probably a different problem so not worried about it for now.)

I also replaced my old round style air box with the newer rectangle shaped one, and was wondering what the sensor thing on it is for? I left it in there and have the wires sticking out for now.

Anyways the car seems to be okay, its just parked and I haven't been able to take it for a drive to see how much better.

that sensor is the Intake Air Temperature sensor... On your 88 it's incorporated into your MAF... However you can connect the appropriate wires from your MAF to it and eliminate your MAF completely...

done and done! The wires are the same color which made it so easy! The SES light is completely off now
(and yes, my MAF is off and can burn in hell!)

      Thanks guys

Just so you know, the wiring is still there connected to the ECM, and I even had a fuse for mine. Just make sure that the wires that you no longer use, you tape them up, and tuck the away so that you can't accidentally cause a problem. When I did mine, I just put electical tape over the plug, and stuck the old plug under the remote terminal post next to the battery, and cruise control.

          Thanks for the tip.

I wrapped tape around it then I dressed up my engine a bit by putting red plastic wire-wrap around all the wires. Now I'm trying to figure out why the light under the hood doesn't work (never has since I've owned the car). The bulb is fine cause I tested it on the interior.. and I don't think its the connection cause I jammed some wire into the small harness and got nothing.. much be the springy hood switch or something.

seeing that I had to replace my speed sensor, chances are, you will need to as well. Lets just say that you will know almost immediatly if you need to. Your speedo will suddenly become VERY optimistic.

One of my friends has that problem with his 1989 Cutlass Supreme. He just ran a new power wire for it fron the plug that is just over the brake booster to the remote terminal. Works fine now.

not to threadjack, but am I the only one here that know's where 3100 MPFI got the quote from in his sig? Bet I am...... PBS is good for something after all.....

As for the hood light, I don't think there is a springy hood switch, I thought they all used an angle switch in the light housing? Check for power at the connector, if not, chase back in the circuit until you find some.

There IS some sort of springy switch - looks just like the kind on your door for open or closed.. and its up above the firewall where the hood presses down on it.. I just assumed thats what it was for.

I'm thinking the same thing.. ANGLE switch... I looked , and looked and looked, had the hood off the car, blah blah blah.. nothing.. Its in the light housing.. Which BTW is riveted to the hood brace

I fixed my hood light, and it was the springy switch. I do believe it was only on 1988 cars.. because I looked through the whole yard until I found ONE 1988 Regal that had the switch. Every other car 1989 and newer did not have this switch.

Heres a horrible pic I just took with my crappy walmart digicam.

(thats a horrible pic of the switch on a piece of paper, my camera is crap)

Its the switch (springy type, looks like the kind for a door) from a 1988 regal, same as my 88 GP. It mounts above the firewall and the hood presses it down to turn the light off. I looked at a 1989 GP and it had the newer style light (no switch).

Doncha just LOVE Mrs. Slocombe? I can't get enough of that show. I have the box set too. I watch it EVERY CHANCE I GET!!!!!

                          Back to business.

I have the indent in the black plastic shroud where the switch should go, but I have the newer light. There is not even a hole there. Just the indent for it. WEIRD HUH????? Probably a Canadian thing!!!!!

                          Just kidding.

If you look closely, you can see the indent in the picture, It is just above the alternator and to the left some. There is a silver bolt right next to it. I will try to take a better picture later. It is kinda hard to see, but when you do see it, it will just jump out at you and scream BOO!!!!!
