  • torque spec needed - rear cam cover bolts

i'm pulling my 3.1 MPFI Turbo off of the engine stand today so i can replace the rear cam cover gasket and rear main seal.

i can't find the torque spec for the three rear cam cover bolts in my Haynes manual or this site.

also does the gasket use RTV? i was thinking probably using a thin layer of black RTV on both sides...

    TIA

ok i got the rear block face cleaned up and replaced the rear main seal. i have the rear cam cover surfaces all cleaned up and ready to go on....

it's 3 small 10mm bolts and uses a cork gasket...does that mean no RTV or?

i went to the library and looked through their Chilton, Haynes & Mitchell repair manuals and came up empty handed

any help really appreciated, i need to get this done before i have to bolt the motor back up to the stand. it's hanging off the cherry picker right now.

    thanks

Hey Geoff, where did you find that number? I looked all over and never found a number... We might want to add that to our torque specs.

ok i dont get it... in my gm service manual (89 2.8l Z24) it says nothing about a gasket being on the cam plug, but only to use sealer P/N 1052914

              any thoughts on this??

next question is that the block i have on my workstand is a 1990 3.1L, did they change from not using a gasket in 89 to using one in 90????

any P/N's or other info would be greatly appreciated
              got zap-straps?

last time i had the tranny out from behind a gen 1/2 660 i had to reseal the cam plug (they always leak). i tried to get a gasket and could get one, nobody lists it. its something that only comes in a gasket set. i always just use silicone.

i have tonnes of gasket material sitting around, knowing this would it be a good idea to make a gasket IF i did not get a gasket set?

You can just silicone it there is no need for a gasket if you dont have one.

i bought my rear cam cover gasket seperately from Checker for about $6. i'll find the part # tomarrow and post it. i used no sealer, just the gasket installed dry (which is cork with metal O-rings around the bolt holes).
