  • loud clicking/knocking noise from under the hood?

Hi there i have a 93 Grand am it has a 3.3L engine ( i know its a 90* but i thought maybe someone here could help) well anyways i rebuilt the transmission in it about 2 weeks ago, and when i first test drove it there was a clicking noise comming from under the hood that was not there before, then it went away later that night, i dont believe its the transmission, you could only hear it at a dead stop and if you reved it the clicking would go away. but like i said it went away that night, i figured it might have been the starter hitting the flywheel very slightly, well anyways i drove home today after driving for about 2 hours and when i pulled into my driveway and put it in park, i shut the radio off and i heard the clicking noise again, only this time it was louder and there was an intermitant knocking along with it, and when you rev it it clicks faster and louder, i was thinking maybe rod bearings because when my last transmission went out the car was at 4000rpm- redline for about 250 km's , but rod bearings dont make a constant clicking noise that is in harmony with the engine and im not getting an oil pressure light, so then im thinking maybe timing chain tensioner if it has one. im clueless. i really need help because i cant afford for anything else to go wrong with the car cuz im broke and in alot of debt right now, also i have not beat on the car at all since the new transsmision, it hasnt even been over 3000rpm (except once when i passed someone i brought it to 4000 rpm) any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Going to 4000 or 5000 is not beating it man. I run mine to 5500 at least every drive I go on. Plus I race it all throught the summer at the strip. I only do regualr 5000km oil changes.

So anyway. It is VERY HARD to diagnose sounds while on the net. But from the way your describing it it could be a bearink. No valvetrain part will make a hard knock. Valvetrain is always a chattering/clicking type noise.
