  • 3100 death, yay or nay for me?

a waitress at work has a 96-ish i think grand am. it hasnt movved for quite some time, now its in a shop. the problem is it won't start, the way she decribes it sounds like a fuel delivery problem, tries to start but to no avail.
so i think its either a fuel pump, or maybe scince she ran out of oil at one time,or so she said, which caused quite a number of other problems (collapsed lifters and something else i dont remeber), that the oil pump fried and there isnt enough oil presure for the pcm to justify letting the motor run. then i almost dismissed that because no oil = no pressure = shouldnt have self destructed.
as it is now, if she has to have the motor replaced i can snag her old one for $100. even if it needs completely redone, i think its a good deal. not like i can ever get anything without taking it apart anyways. I'll have a block with a better oiling system and stuff to build better power on later down the road.
what are the chances of a small victory on my part? or is it most likely an easily remedied situation?

You'd have to know more. If it's turning over, and not making a racket doing it, then it shouldn't be anything serious, I wouldn't think. I wouldn't think that she's in this for an engine, though. Fuel pump/filter maybe, but I would doubt an engine.

turns out o be yay for me, the motor was dead, or so they say. i can get it for 100 bucks (a motor for that price is practacly free to me), and i get a new toy to tinker with. i never drop in used motors anyway, alyaws freshen them up while its out.

she her car (140k) to a shop, they said it was a timing set ($1100), i said, right... then after they got the motor out, they said they needed $1800 more to rebuild it. so she dropped them and towed it home. she found a 98 3100 with 70k on it for 600 bucks. the car is a 96 grand am. wasnt there a few little changs between 96 and 98? like coolant temp sensor or something?

i still think its the fuel pump, but what do i know.

maybe i'll destroke it with the 2.8 crank, port, turbo, blah blah i dunno, sort of almost excited. guess al i really wanted was the roller block.

Nope. No changes were made made between 96 and 98, you're thinking 99+ Grand Am's (or maybe 94 - 95).
