  • Sea Foam or GM Top Engine Cleaner?

Anyone used either of those lately, and is one any different from the other? My car has 78k miles on it and I'm not aware of anying using this kind of engine treatment on the car. Any feedback on how good this stuff works? Anything else I should know about this stuff?

plan on replacing your spark plugs after wards...

i use sea foam because its cheaper than gm top engine cleaner and both do the same thing...

pour one can in a vacume line slowly (you may need to massage the throttle to keep it running) and when you have about 1/3 of a can left, dump it all at once and let the car flood out.

let it set for about an hour. put another can in your crank case with your oil and run (idle) for about 10 mins and then change the plugs once the engine cooled off enough. drain the oil and fill up with fresh stuff and a new filter.

why in the fuck would you pout that shit into the crankcase! I do not recommend that at all. If your bottom end is sludged up from piss poor oil change intervals, the viscocity change from this stuff washing out the sludge will all but kill the motor in short order. If you change the oil when its due, then you shouldn't have any need to ever pour anything but oil in your crankcase. Some people use kerosene inthe crankcase to clean the motor out, which I am only hoping is a similar scenario for the extremely harsh top engine cleaner.

You are gonna have a hell of a time pouring fluid into a vacuum line. You will want to have a long, narrow piece of vacuum line coming off the engine to put into the bottle. You will have to crack the throttle some to keep it running. When its about out, let off the throttle and it should die. You don't want to dump a shitload at once into the motor, in case you get too much into a cylinder and it cannot compress the liquid. Also, you want to have the motor at operating temp. I never let mine sit for an hour, 15 minutes will usually do. The idea is for the heat to help the cleaner attack the carbon buildup.

Be prepared for a smoke show when you try to start the car back up as well. It will be a pain to start, then after you do have it running you will want to drive around at varying throttle positions to clean all the junk out of the motor. A new O2 sensor would be a good idea afterwards too, though I have noticed no adverse effects of this process in the computer using a scanner.

it says you can do it right on the can.

ive done it many times one my 3100 and it lasted about 160,000 miles

ive done it to every engine ive owned even with regular oil changes there is a sludge buildup. its the natural byproduct of any oil you use.

its basically solvents and wont hurt your engine.

The bottom of the oil pan is the only place I saw any sludge in my motor when I tore it down. I guess its safer than I thought but its still never going in my oil pan.

I used to think I could fix my engine with some 'additive' and a new sensor.

                    Cleaning...

I've known a few people to just use 3 qts of water with the engine
at operating temp... I was actually considering this method. Best
yet... it's free. Gotta do it slow to avoid hydro-lock... no need for
                    new plugs.

                      RE: Cleaning...

Ive heard of a mist of water in the intake to help break up the carbon....but 3 quarts. The only place 3 quarts of water belongs is the coolant passages.

Pouring water into the engine doesn't sound like a good idea at all. I think I'll stick with something that's made to go into the engine.

Oh, it works. Use a spray bottle and use either water or trans fluid. Works wonders, it really does.

                              trans fluid?!!?

i don't think water would hurt anything or even alcohol....after all lots of people use alcohol or water injection on turbocharged engines. not only is it a "chemical intercooler" but i've heard it also steam cleans the combustion chambers.
