sure it was from the valve cover
if it was valvetrain noise it would have been at half of engine frequency
might have actaully been a small leak at the exhaust manifold
they can sound like that

This happened of my g/f's car. It started the same way too. Just got more gradual as time went on until it was there all the time. New gasket did the trick.

head gasket?... i think over the summer a hybrid swap is in order. what i still have to do is make that damn adapter plate for the egr valve.
