I am the owner of a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 door coupe. My fuel pump also caused many of the same issues as your car did. I found your post in February of 2012. My car started acting up during the summer of 2011. I replaced numerous parts over the course of a year trying to solve my car's hot start problem. This car would run flawlessly no matter where or how far that I drove it, making two 6 hour trips this spring with no issues before the car died in my driveway in May 2012. This car NEVER showed any signs of a problem once it was being driven, no matter how far, no matter warm weather or cold. The problem it had was after sitting for maybe 30 minutes or so it would misfire and often stall. Often I could run the engine at about 3 grand or so and it would clear up mostly after a minute or so. Once I began driving, within a mile or so(if it would stay running) it would eventually clear up then run flawlessly. I had found that after driving it that if I knew I was going to be going somewhere within the next few hours that by opening the hood and letting the heat excape that the car would start up everytime with no misfire. I learned this by coming home on my lunch breaks after figuring something was heat soaked under the hood. Once while visiting my Dad for about 30 minutes, I started the car only to have it misfire then stall. He had an industrial fan in the garage so we plugged it in and let it blow toward the coil pack side of the engine. Within 5 minutes or so it started and ran perfectly. Usually after a failed attempt at starting once hot it could take 45 minutes or so with the hood open for the car to start again, and also running smoothly after start up. The problem had become so bad this spring that after 5 minutes of idling while waiting at drive through Restaurants it would start to misfire. In May of 2012 after driving then parking the car in my driveway I went out to start the car and leave. It sputtered then died. I opened the hood as always figuring it would start in a short time. After a couple of hours of trying to restart and with the car never firing at all I decided to leave it overnite and start it right up in the morning like always. It wouldn't. Because of this thread I had been suspecting a faulty fuel pump by then, so I checked the fuel rail for pressure, there was none. I spent $150.00 for a fuel pump/sender/fuel filter and $150.00 for labor to install. I've had the car back for three days with the car showing no signs of misfire. After numerous drives over three days, letting the hot car heat soak with the hood down, it starts up everytime with no misfire. It was the fuel pump, not head gaskets, not the ignition module, not plugs, not wires, not crank sensor, not any of the other parts that I replaced either. Fuel pump. Thanx for posting.
