  • Roller or ball stud ??

OK, went to the dealership to buy intake gasket at lunch. Parts guys asks if I have roller or ball stud rockers. I had the vavle covers off but I can't remember. Do the roller rocker arms have roller bearings at the rocker pivot point or at the tips? The parts guys said they couldn't tell which kind of rocker I had from the VIN but the intake gasket is different depending on which kind of rocker. What's the deal are there two plants that made the 3100 in 1995? If it was a mid-year change I would figure the part would be VIN XXX34000 and higer kind of thing.

So, back to the rockers, are the rockers on a rod that runs from one end of the head to the other or what?

Its hit or miss you have to look.

But in either case you can order type 2 gaskets and just clip off the little pushrod holders. Thats what I would do if you dont wana go check.

A general rule of thumb is if the coolant was green from the factory then it has the ball/nut style rocker arms. If it had the orange Dexcool antifreeze from the factory then it has the roller rocker style. This isn't 100% but is usually the case.

A '95 I'm pretty sure should not be roller rockers. I didn't think they changed until '96. But anyways, since your taking the intake manifold off anyways, pull the front valve cover and take a peek. A roller rocker will be obvious. If you had it off, I don't know how you don't remember. I think you would've noticed if it were a roller. Anyways, if it comes down to it, you can always trim the gaskets.
