  • Setting the timing

Hey guys, I am new to the board and it looks like you guys definately know your stuff when it comes to these motors. I have an '86 celebrity with the 2.8 and I just replaced the distributor in it. My question is, how do I set the timing and what do I set it at? The distributor is a divorced coil style but I am pretty sure it has EST. I have the service manual but it mainly talks about the HEI distributors. It also mentions unplugging the EST connector but some people say I shouldn't unplug it. Also I don't know which plug is for the EST. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Ok you have an HEI distributor. It is computer controlled. First things first get the engine to operating temperature.

Then go and find you EST wire. It is usually Tan with a black stripe and will be below the heater box/blower motor in the engine compartment or under the dash by the ECM in the cabin. You can easily identify it because it will have a black connector and will seperated from the main ECM harness. Find it and disconnect it.

You are now at base timing. When at idle get out your timing light and check your timing. Set it at 10* or whatever it says on your emissions sticker under the hood. When done setting timing turn off the car. Re-connect the wire and start the car back up. Done!

I can't really see any place to disconnect it from easily, could I just jump it to a ground or something?

No you need to remove the wire. It has to be there somewhere. It will have a black connector and all you need to do it remove it.

Did you check by the computer under the dash and just under the carpet at the top on the passenger side?
