  • Throttle tip in hesitation

I've got a 1994 Lumina with the 3.1 MPFI V6, and it's got this hesitation when you get on the gas from a stop...in gear, or even in park. Engine temp doesn't seem to affect it much, if at all.

I've run a few cans of injector cleaner through it, and it seems to help for a day or so. I've tried all three grades of gasoline, and no dice, there, either. I have noticed that when I ease on the throttle, REAL slow, it's fine, and doesn't hesitate.

When it is really cold, it gets to the point where it tries to kill itself, but doesn't. It ALWAYS comes back. The car has 186,000 miles on it, and probably does need a tuneup, but it runs alright other than that. I did pull two spark plugs the other day, just to check, and they are fine. Not sure how old they are, though.

Am I looking at a throttle position switch, or something else here? Thanks.

OK, then how would I go about checking one of these? Are the ones from the 3100 V6's the same, 'cuz if they are, I've got one of those in my Olds, and I can steal parts to test.

My bird does the same...it isn't a tune-up issue cause I've rebuilt the upper half of the motor, and I have new plugs, sensor, wires, TB, etc.

I heard somewhere that something in the ThrottleBody area wears out (plastic cable guide?), and when you get on the gas...the TPS will register the Throttle opening and adjust accordingly, but due to the "wear" the throttle hasn't exactly opened yet. Makes sense.

My car does the stumble only when cold.

Yeah, I'm noticing that more and more, that when it's cold outside, which is also when the engine is really cold, it gets like that. I was inaccurate in the first post saying that it didn't seem to be affected by engine temp. That isn't totally the case. It still happens warm, too, but not quite as much. Thanks for that info.

I should also mention that I may have found the problem tonight, anyways. I think slowbird may have information that will be useful later, but I found one obvious problem. A while back, I had a spark plug wire fail, and I replaced it. That was for #6. The wire was a little long, and I couldn't get the retainer open to secure it. Thought I had it in a decent spot, and could get away with it being unsecured. Radiator fan caught it. It fired #6 via the fan and/or the radiator, hence the intermittent miss. I'll replace all six wires and plugs...needed it anyways, probably. And, we'll go from there.

              Glad you found the problem.

Car has no more hesitation now?

Well, we'll have to see. I haven't changed anything yet...that's a weekend project. I'm waiting for the plug wires yet...should be here Friday. Dealer didn't have a set...none of 'em did! But, I should be able to have them in time for the weekend. No gimmick plugs, no fancy wires...using AC plugs, and Genuine GM wires.

BTW, what should I gap the plugs at? They are set at .040" but aren't they supposed to be .045"? Being as how this engine is stock, has 186,000 miles on it, and all that jazz, is there any alternate gap setting to use? Thanks.

                      Good deal...thanks.

EDIT: Hopefully, sometime this weekend, I'll be able to report back that all is well. If not, thanks for the info thus far...we'll see how much of it I need!

OK...it went from bad to worse...quick. The car was in the driveway, and I went to pull it around back to the garage. About 100' out of the driveway, it quit, and now, it won't refire. When you turn it over, it catches...hard. Like it's loading up on fuel, and it will actually quit turning over. If they key stays turned long enough (figure a second or so), it will turn over again, but it starts backfiring, through the exhaust. I did have the #6 wire completely removed during this time, as it was the dead wire anyways. Didn't think to put a the new one on. Did I kill something? The valvetrain does move when the engine is turning over, so the timing chain is intact. It ran two days ago, and then all of a sudden...this. What gives?

Over the course of sitting in the driveway for two days? I mean, yeah, anything is possible, but it was running alright until I moved it today.

Next update...it's got good spark...really strong spark. Trying to find my fuel pressure guage, and we'll go from there. If it has fuel pressure, what do I look for next? The filter isn't very old, if I remember right. I'm trying to get a hold of my dad to find that out, as he owned the car previous, and the fuel pump and filter were done relatively recently.
