  • Is this the sign of a bad motor/tranny mount?

Every now and then when I'm backing out of my driveway, I'll hear a little clunk as I hit the lip were my driveway meets the road. I can also here a clunk if I really mash the gas and the engine shifts at a higher RPM. Then, I'll occasionally here it when I'm braking hard or letting off the brakes after hitting them hard. But I don't hear it when hitting normal bumps or potholes or anything. I just had the car in to get the front driver's side hub bearing replaced and they did the alignment and everything. They never mentioned anything about ball joints being bad (which I'm sure they would have if they thought the could get some more cash out of me! ). This "clunk" started before the car was getting worked on though. So what do you think? Is it time for new mounts?

sounds like a broken mount. have someone in the car brake-torquing (while holding the brakes, bring the rpm up a bit, say to 1500, for a few seconds) and watch the mounts to see wwhat mount is being stressed. do it in both forward and reverse. you should be able to see were the motor is lifting, and that will let you know what mount to replace.

clunking on accel/decel could be inner CV joint

Wouldn't the CV joints be more of a consistent sound though?

problems with the outer joint can cause the usual clicking sound when turning, but the inner joint can be responsible for shudder, vibration or clunking when accelerating or decelerating.

So how do I go about checking the inner CV joints?
