  • Fuel float ??

Well my neighbor borrowed my z yesterday and told me the car just died on her . Got there and found out it was out of gas. she told me that the gas gauge read at about 1/4 tank when it stalled out and sputtered on her. When I got there the gas gauge read bone dry . Is this a bad float and if so how do I go about replacing it ? I cant even find a price for it on autozone.com or partsamerica.com . help me out please

the float is part of the whole sending unit, and i think it all has to be replaced as a unit. has it ever acted up for you??? if not, im guessing your neighbor is trying to cover her screw up. it wouldnt be a float problem if the car read 1/4 tank and it was empty, cause the float would be floating in air then.

Ok so the float is a part of the sending unit . Thanks for the info. The float has never acted up on me before. Im gonna keep an eye out on the gas gauge to see if it fluctuates a lot or acts weird . Hopefully it doesnt.

I woulda just put a gallon or so of gas in the tank and see where it read then. With just that little bit, you could have gonna close to verifying her story. But yeah, I think she's just covering up. Although, I have seen my guage go all the way to empty, then start to come back up some right before running out of gas...

well this happened last night. i already overfilled the tank. I put maybe .3 gallons in the car to get it to a gas station ( drove it like i stole it) and then overfilled the tank (14 gallons). Im gonna keep an eye on it and see.

I have experienced the exact same problem driving my cutlass.. 1/4 tank on the gauge and a dry tank. A baffle in the fuel tank came loose and collided with the sending unit.
