  • Thermostat questions.

Hi everybody, new here so please bear with me! I have a 1999 Pontiac grand Prix with the 3100 motor. I was going to change the thermostat from the 195 to the 180 but, nobody had or could get the 180. I have talked to people that are running the 180, so I know they make one. Any tips on how to get one? I went ahead and put a new 195 Stant in untill I could get a 180. Now the car heats up when I sit stillfor a couple of minutes, never did that before. Any ideas? When I am running down the road it is reading fine, only have a problem when it is sitting. I did open the bleeder valves on the thermostat houseing and on the water pump, untill I got straight water, no air.

No parts company I've been to has had anything but a 195 stat for FWD 60V6 cars. You have to ask for a F-body 60V6 t-stat. I asked for a Camaro 3.1 180 stat and it works great in my Cutlass Supreme.

if the 3100 and 3.1 stats are the same you could also get a stcok stat for and LD9 2.4TC they are 180 and fit in a 3.1

What is the 2.4TC? I just asked for a Camaro 3.1 stat and it worked fine.

a 2.4 DOHC also known as TC which stands for twin cam as it says on the top of the motor
it is basically a redesigned quad 4 that puts out 150 hp @6000rpms

Thanks guys, i will see what I can find out. By the way what is the difference between the "single valve" and the "double valve"?

My guess would be the number or valves per cylinder for intake and exhaust. Single valve = pushrod; Double valve = OHC with 4 valves per cyl. That's just a guess though.

Just cut the hose and do away with the stock thermostat. Put in an in-line. Any temp you want. Stat makes them.

HEY TEE JAY3800! I just called my local parts guy and asked for a mid ninties camaro stat for the 3.1. He said "yep, got one right here, 195 degree!" Maybe I need a different year?

No the valves are on the stat its self. The double valve looks like the stock model. The single valve looks like the older 70's model stats. I guess I know what the difference is by looking at them, just wondered the difference in the way they work.

I see, lol. I didn't read your post close enough and thought you were talking about the valve train.

I also heard that the bleeder valves on these motors suck! the best way to get the air out is to only put the radiator cap on to the first notch and drive it. That way the air can escape. Any ideas on this therory?

Damn, I dont know either! lol! Thats why I was asking. If you wouldnt do that, why not? I am guessing because the cap wont let it build pressure, therefore it will get hotter. Right?
