  • EGR Circuit

    1993 Z34 Auto 130000 miles

Recently my SES light popped on for the first time since owning the car, now 2 years, and the trouble code flashes code 32, EGR Circuit.

Now this would have me believe that the EGR valve has gone bad or needs cleaning, but there is a twist to this.

It does not happen all the time nor in city (start/stop) conditions under say 35mph. It usually happens at the end of my freeway run to or from work as I am running up the exit ramp. A little more strange is that as the fuel level in the tank goes down, it happens less frequently or not at all. For instance, the tank has been filled 3 times since this began happening. The first time it seemed the problem "went away", but reappeared when I filled the tank, it again seemed to go away once the tank got below about 1/2. Now it have ran that tank out and refilled and the problem immediately reappeared.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

The EGR only functions some of the time (depending on engine conditions), and thus only seeing the problem at certain times is to be expected. I would say clean it all up and see if the problem still remains. As far as the fuel tank level affecting it, I have no clue...

My friend had a similar problem. the SES light would come on, and it was always an EGR code, but the EGR was working fine, and the car ran fine. Turns out that the EGR part of the INTAKE had TOTALLY clogged up. We took the intake off, and I spent about an hour spraying cleaners in there, and cleaning the stuff out. Once that was done, we have not had the problem since. If you take the intake off the car, and open the throttle body, and look in there (it is on the top about even where the EGR is, but higher), you should be able to see the crusty stuff in there).

The EGR is not in anyway part of the fuel sending unit circuit. Its just a coincidence, just do what 3100 MPFI said and clean out that part of the intake.
