  • 3.1 TBI failed emissions

    1990 lumina APV. 3.1 TBI. 132k miles

    here's what is set/new:

timing set to 0*(spec on sticker)
    new plugs, wires, cap, rotor
    new o2 sensor
    new catco cat
    rebuilt throttle body
    new fuel pressure regulator diaphragm
    new injectors
    new fuel pump and filter
    new map sensor

however - the EGR valve is stuck and therefore unplugged.

it failed HC with 244ppm on a limit of 195. would having a new EGE hooked up solve this? or is it something else?

I bet it is your cat converter. Its too small and not lighting at idle or low RPM. Happens all the time.

Try advancing the timing a bit and run Mohawk (ethanol blended) gas. It will help reduce HC. But with an advance in timing you will heat up combustion and may fail NOx if you do not have your EGR working. Oh make sure the engine is nice an hot when you go for the test. Take it on the freeway and open that slut up. Drive it like you stole it. Gets the cat real warm and helps blow out any deposits
