First, let me introduce myself. I'm Steve. I have an 87 Fiero GT, V6 with an automatic transmission.
I posted this over on Pennock's but no one seems to want to help me so i figured who better to ask thatn the 60* experts. I'll just copy and paste my post from Pennock's.
My car has a terrible idle and I dont really know how to remedy this. It's an 87 GT V6 automatic. Help me out. Here's the story.
When idling in park, right after I start it and until it hits about 180* it idles around 1500, I say around because it bounces between about 1350 and 1500. Once it hits 180* or so, (probably 195* for the t-stat) it idles around 1000 but again it bounces, but this time from about 900-1050. Also, if I have it in drive and its idling (at a traffic light, in the driveway, etc.) if it sits there idling for more than say... 90 seconds? It will start to idle very erratically bouncing between 1400 and 500, dipping lower and lower each time, until it eventually stalls out.
My dad and I checked the vacuum. We pulled the hose right above the distributor. there was no suction on the line. I'm not sure if that is bad. Anyway, we plugged the vacuum guage into the manifold and we were pulling 18-20". It was hard to get an exact number because the idle isnt solid. But it seems like the vacuum is good.
Also, every 3rd time or so when I get in the car and drive around, it has a slight miss throughout the RPM range. I don't know if that could have anything to do with it.
The entire ignition system was replaced within the last 2000 miles and the timing was set twice. Once by my dad who is an ex-mechanic (is there even such a thing?) and once by my neighbor at his shop.
So what could be wrong with this car? I'm stumped.
The car also doesn't start in the cold weather, about 40* or less. It just floods. I dont know if this is linked or not. Forgot to say that i recently replaced the O2 sensor and the temp sensor in the air filter box. The fuel filter was replaced recently too. Also, it seems that this started soon after I put an ALDL cable on it. The cable made the car run like crap and was removed shortly after install, but could it have shorted something out maybe?
Thanks,
Steve
