  • Wont start

My brother has just bought a 89 Beretta GT. The mileage is high (202k) but the car ran nicely and the tranny shifted great. When we went to pick it up on Sunday the car wouldnt start. I believe its a fuel problem . One of the things I noticed is the oil pressure always reads past 80 psi when Im cranking the car . I know the fuel pump is not kicking on at all. I tried jumping the fuel pump and I got nothing . I looked at the fuses and they are all good although it was missing a circuit breaker. On a whim I bought a oil pressure sending unit b/c I heard that if this goes it may prevent the fuel pump from engaging. Im just looking for other peoples opinions on the matter . We plan on doing a tuneup on the car as soon as it gets to my house. Do u guys think its that sending unit or could it be something else?

It could easily be the sending unit because the fuel pump circuitry must go through the oil pressure sender before hitting the fuel pump relay.

OkI started working on my brothers car . I ran into a problem. I bought an oil pressure sending unit socket but when I try to get the unit off it wont come off. Is there a special procedure to get this thing off ?

Does the fuel pump even prime?

There is a fuel pump prime lead in your wiring harness. It is in the drivers side harness that come through the firewall. Find it and give it 12V. It will run the pump. If your pump does not run the it is dead.

I was told I can test certain wires on the relay and the oil pressure sending unit to see if they are working . Can anyone tell me which wires they are ?

Tell ya what if you haven't ever replaced the fuel pump that may very well be the problem.

My Lumina would turn over, but not start...Test the relay and it was fine, test the pump from the tank plug and got no response.

I think that one or even two wires of the pressure senders wires are on the same path, but I was told that these wires are common to ground and are not potentially different to cause shorts between draw on either side.

My schematic shows no Pressure sender so I am unsure if it is electrically related to the fuel pump, but one thing for sure is that when my lumina's fuel pump went out the oil light flickerd as a tried to start it.

If you can load the fuel pump externally and see if you get any amperage draw. Do a Ohms test to see if there is continuity between paired leads on either side at the pumps connector.
