  • Died for a moment while accelerating

The 91 Sunbird rides again, now stronger and faster then ever! was accelerating and for a moment it seemed ro go dead, the gas pedal felt soft and the rpm's dropped to zero. I took my foot off the gas and prayed just a little which must have worked because it came back to life. Before I even lost too much speed. I couldn't replicate the event yet. Any ideas as to what happened?

Not good news Hal. I'm hoping it's not the fuel pump. If you were just doing normal driving before that than the guess would be water in the gas. Put some Heet or even better put some injector cleaner in that also takes out water. They both have alcohol in them which binds with the water there for getting it out of the tank.
The car did sit for a long time so the water(if there is any) and gas have had time to separate. In other words you can run just fine most of the time until you put the gas down. Sometimes there will also be a stumble off the line too if there is a lot.
    Sure hope it's just water!

The fuel pump was one of the last repairs I had done before starting to work on her myself, and that was probably about two years ago at most, I'll add heet tomorrow or more likely any dri-gas I can find on my way to work at 5:30 am. Thanks, I hope all is well and again thanks for all the help!

Ps. This might be a good time to throw a gallon of sea foam in the tank? I almost bought some today too!!!

Stick with Heet or Dri-gas for now.

I put dri-gas this morning and made it to work with many stalls on the way, after work it wouldn't run for more then a few seconds . It seemed a lot like what happened over the winter when it died. I borrowed a multi meter from hospital maintenance and sure enough the fuel injectors that I didn't replace had all died. I made it to the parts store and installed 4 injectors, finished just before it got dark. She started right up and ran great all the way home with the exception of 3 low rpm stalls. When I gave it gas it took off like a rocket and didn't stall as was the case this morning so I'm sure it was the right assessment, but those 3 stalls still concern me.....

all of the factory gen2 injectors(and I assume gen1) are timebombs at this point.... they're known for shorting internally, I imagine that is what you confirmed on your meter? I've seen a couple go completely open though.

since you made some major part changes, have you reset the ECM? learned fuel trims and IAC positions with wonky parts can cause interesting things to happen when functional parts come into play.
