My car (with '86 2.8 mpfi) has slowly been developing a very annoying exhaust sound. It sounds like something is rattling very loud, but it is the exhaust note itself. It happens at light throttle, from about 2200 rpm through 2500 rpm. I've tried different types of mufflers and with/without the cat converter, the rattle sound is always there. It sounds horrible compared to all my other 2.8 cars. I'm at a loss as to what is causing the noise, but it is driving me nuts! Can anyone help me out with some ideas?
Also, the car is always parked for the winter, and when started in spring, it always idles/runs poorly until there's fresh gas in the tank. I have always suspected the injectors could stand to be replaced. Well this last fall, the car started randomly cutting off and not restarting (bad pickup coil or module or something) but ran fine otherwise. I just parked it for the winter. Come springtime, I installed a new (not reman) distributor and set the timing to where I set it last time. I did not start the car before installing the dizzy however. Once running and up to temp, the car did not like to idle like it does every year... but this time, fresh gas did not take care of it. So I'm pretty sure at last a few of the injectors are completely shot.
Anyway, I think it's far fetched, but can faulty injectors cause my crappy/rattling exhaust note? That would be a first for me, but everything else on the car checks out good.
