I know this is off-topic for this thread, but I wasn't getting any responses in the off-topic area and I need a car yesterday. I hope somebody can shed light on this.
I have just replace the Turn Signal Switch on my 1998 Lumina LS 3100 when I noticed something; luckily, I took pictures throughout the project. After pulling off the steering wheel and the airbag coil (I marked in 2 spots and taped the inner ring because if it moves you have to do a reset), I see the view of the first two pictures where the spring loaded pin on the top left is being pressed down by the lock plate.
I subsequently noticed that in the pictures of the steering column from the guide I printed off of tss.likeabigdog.com were different. The spring loaded pin was nicely protruding into a slot on the edge of the lock plate. Subsequently, I went to a friends house and looked at his steering column (97 Lumina) and same spring loaded pin is in the slot. So I decided that mine should probably be anchored there too. When I did that everything went fine until I looked at the two alignment marks I had made on the coil. They are off by an 1/8". The guide says that you have to do a reset and the warning from my Chilton's is the same--Dont' let the inner ring move.
So, do I just put it back the way it was with the lip of the lock plate pushing down on the pin so that my marks align -or- do I leave it and try and do a reset on the coil? How do you do a reset on the coil?
The original symptoms were both lower brake lights not working (rear window one still does) and left turn signal intermittent. If you could get the left turn signal to work (usually by pulling very very slowly down on the turn signal lever) then all the brakes would work at that time too.
