shaving new upper plenum gaskets?

After installing new upper plenum gaskets it seems that the upper plenum no longer is flush to the lower intake manifold. Is it sometimes necessary to shave down a new gasket going into a non remanufactured engine or am I getting something else wrong?

Are you saying that the upper intake manifold is not sitting flat on teh lower intake manifold? If so, you've missed something. Those two parts should ALWAYS fit flat to each other, without doing any modifications to the gaskets.
