  • Question : How to replace leaking power steering pump?

A few months ago all of a sudden all the power steering leaked out. I refilled it and it was ok, nothing leaked afterwards. Now I am having a slow leak and the oil is getting all over the place to other pullies, under the hood, the firewall, etc.... I assume it is the shaft seal that is failed so how do you go about replacing the pump? How does the pulley come off? I see there is a hex inside the middle so how is the pulley attached or how to remove the pulley would be something I need to know as I need to transfer the old pulley to the new pump assembly.

It would help us help you.

I read the pump instructions that I cannot use a press or hammer on the old pulley. So how do you get this accomplished?

any tips on how to remove and install this would be highly appreciated.

          Press for what?

To swap the entire pump it,s just a bolt remove/install and lines disconnect/connect-bleed.

To remove the pulley to swap onto a new pump that doesnt come with pulley you will need a GM pulley puller kit. The local AutoZone here rents the correct kit for a temp/reimbursable fee.

the pulley is going to be the difficult part for me as I do not have the tools or means locally to rent it. so i would need to buy.

$20 at harbor freight. It's not shop quality, but it will work a few times before showing its Chinese roots.

Used a turkey baster to suck up all the fluid from the reservoir and then removed the pump assembly.

try to buy one locally but if that fails then Princess auto here i come. It is a drag since the wait is for the item to get here.

postal service delivered the pulley puller kit this afternoon. Now afterwork I am trying to figure out how to use this kit?? Are you supposed to put the washer between the pulley and the threaded bolt? how do you keep the pulley from spinning when you are tightening the bolt down to pull out the pulley? Any tips or tricks? Even with the tool I feel doomed.

Nice work, great illustrations, and good quality parts. How much was the power steering pump and where did you purchase it?
